(Pixabay) The Twin Towers used to grace the New York City skyline, but after the tragedy they only stand as a memory and a symbol for American unity.

Smoke filled the air, and clouds of dust and debris covered the streets of Manhattan. Just about every American knows of the tragic events that transpired on the morning of September 11, 2001. Even those who were not born at the time have learned of these since they were old enough to comprehend history.

On 9/11 in 2001, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were the subject of a terrorist attack by the group al-Qaeda. At 8:46 a.m., the north tower was hit. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., the south tower was hit. Over the next few hours, New York was in terror of what had just happened. Eventually, at 9:59 a.m., the south tower collapsed. After 29 long minutes, the north tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m..

Many of those who were alive on that day remember exactly what happened and where they were as the towers were hit.

Over the past 22 years since the attack, America has undergone a lot of changes and further tragedy due to the attacks. Many people who were around the dust clouds that arose from the remnants of the World Trade Center have faced diseases, primarily cancer, as a result of the chemicals that were present in the air. Many of these people have passed away, but there are still a large number still alive as of 2023.

One of the largest long-term impacts of the attacks is seen in how airports are run in America now. Security is much more stringent and thorough.

The tragic events that occurred on 9/11/01 have echoed throughout American history. The losses from this day are still remembered by all. September 11 has been dubbed as Heroes Day. This is to remember the heroes who fought and even sacrificed their lives on that day in order to help as many of the impacted citizens as possible.
