In the small city of Marco Island, residents are seeing a large project, aimed to improve infrastructure at one of the busiest and most important intersections in the area at Collier Boulevard and Barfield Drive.
This major construction project was approved by the City Council in April of 2025 and was created to address and mitigate congestion and issues regarding traffic flow that have had an effect on residents and tourists for many years. As many know, Collier Boulevard plays a crucial role on the island, being the primary north-south route for navigation. Improvements at this intersection were necessary for safety and overall traffic flexibility.

Construction officially started in September 2025, after the project was competitively bid. City officials acknowledged that how the intersection was constructed at the moment was insufficient and lacked necessary lengths for the turn-lanes, which often made it difficult to manage traffic smoothly and efficiently during peak tourist season. These inadequate conditions contributed to large backups and safety issues, which urged the city to move forward with an overall redesign rather than just short-term tweaks.
The entire picture of the construction improvement project is extensive. There are planned upgrades like the implantation of new traffic signals, controllers, and poles, which will all work together to make the signal operations more modern and improve the traffic. Safety for pedestrians is also a major concern, with some upgrades designed to make intersection crossings a lot safer and more accessible. There is also an intent to place new through lanes during this construction to organize traffic movement and reduce conflict points between cars.

Aside from these surface-level changes to the road, the project also includes meaningful work beneath the intersection. Construction crews are working hard to improve water and reclaimed water, which are vital for maintaining a reliable utility service and supporting future growth on the island. There are also planned sidewalk improvements being added, which is helping to ensure the area remains an accessible place for pedestrians once construction is done.
Even though construction is being done during Marco Island’s busy season, officials have reiterated that the construction is scheduled as a year-long project, regardless of when the start date is. However, this has sparked emotion in residents even off Marco Island. Gracie Johnson, a student at Marco Island Academy, as well as a resident of the Isles of Capri, expresses “the traffic was already bad enough without the construction, now it’s even worse and it takes me an extra 30 minutes to get to school sometimes.”
Because of how complex the plan is and the need for continuous work, especially for utilities underground, construction cannot just be done during a single season or timeframe. Excavations like this require “round-the-clock” lane configurations to ensure safety and stable installation, which makes a phased, 12-month approach necessary for the project to be a success.
Ava Richardson, a Marco Island resident and student at MIA explains “it’s really annoying to have to go all the way around the island instead of just cutting straight through Barfield now but it was also scary to turn left without a designated arrow during season so I’m glad they’re adding these things.”
There has been consistent communication about the benefits of this project, which outweighs the temporary inconvenience of the construction. Community outreach started in July 2025 and has had things like press releases, updates on the City’s official website, and information shared through social media. Once it is completed, the intersection is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, increase efficiency, and ensure safety for both drivers and pedestrians. Originally, Fairlawn Court was a shortcut to get on Barfield, however, due to constant congestion, it was blocked off. Because this intersection has some of the highest congestion levels on Marco Island, the completed construction will have a major quality-of-life impact on residents and visitors.

Financially, this is a major investment for Marco Island. The construction contract totals to $4.7 million and is being worked on by Coastal Concrete Products, LLC, which operates as a Coastal Site Development. City officials view this investment as a necessary step toward making sure that Marco Island’s transportation network can meet current demands and keep being functional in the future.
Overall, the Barfield Drive and Collier Boulevard construction project reflects the city’s commitment to safety, long-term improvement, and quality-of-life for residents and visitors.
Even though the work is extensive, the completed intersection will provide the area with benefits that will last and a stronger transportation system for Marco Island.
