James Asbell is a former Marco Island Academy student who graduated in the class of 2023. Throughout high school, James was a member of 2 clubs: Key Club and the National Honor Society for Science. Key Club allowed James to give back to his community by volunteering at different events around the island. Joining SNHS and becoming its treasurer allowed him to experience different concepts of science while out in the field during each monthly trip, and allowed him to gain some experience in a leadership role.

During his time at MIA, James figured out what he wants to do in the future. MIA has helped him take the next step and go to school at the University of South Florida after graduating. Reflecting on who has helped him get to where he is now, James has said that “Mrs. G was one teacher who truly impacted me.” He continued to add, “She has always supported me throughout my time at MIA, and as the head of Key Club, she pushed me to get out there and volunteer my time helping out with community events.” Lastly, she was the one who convinced him to sign up for the 2022 Portugal and Spain trip, which completely solidified his love for traveling.

James is currently majoring in Marine Biology at USF. James has always had an interest in marine biology and fully committed to the idea of majoring in it towards the end of his junior year at MIA. After college, James would like to travel and cross off a few things on his bucket list. He would also like to look into marine biology internships abroad before finding a career in biology.

James has said that the support from his family and friends has led him to be the person he is today. He’s said that “They’ve helped me grow as a person and have been there for me through every obstacle I’ve faced.” The friendships that he has built while being in college have also shaped him into being a better person. Being around and living with other people his age and sharing the same interests has been a huge part of what has motivated him to continue the path he is taking.

To current and future students of MIA, James would like to share, “To make sure you find people who can hold you accountable to your success.”
