1. Decorating a Christmas tree

This tradition brings families together for a fun, creative activity that sets the tone for the entire season, to the point where people don’t wait until December to put up their Christmas tree. Each tree tells a personal story through the ornaments, making the tradition meaningful for everyone in the family. Some people have a theme they use to decorate their tree, changing it every year, such as a winter wonderland theme one year. It’s also a tradition that’s easy for people of all ages to enjoy, from kids hanging their first to adults and their special touches. Most importantly, the decorated tree becomes the heart of the holiday, creating memories that people look forward to year after year. Â
2. Exchanging Gifts

While meaningful, many people feel it creates pressure to spend money and to find the right gift. Some families prefer focusing on experiences, traditions, or time together over material gifts. Holiday shopping and deadlines can make the tradition feel less joyful. While giving and receiving gifts can be enjoyable for some, it may not evoke the same warm feelings as other traditions. Although popular, it is not regarded as the most popular tradition.Â
3. Christmas Movie Marathons

While enjoyable, they call for a bigger time commitment that not everyone can fit into their busy schedules. Some people also find that watching the same classic movies can feel repetitive. But some people enjoy it and look forward to watching the movies, bringing back memories and nostalgia every year. Even though they create cozy moments, not everyone considers this tradition worth doing every year. But it is safe to say that for some people, movie marathons remain a well-liked tradition.
4. Advent Calendars

Although fun, not every family makes this tradition a yearly thing. Many people enjoy the countdown and having something to look forward to every day, but it’s a small, quick activity that doesn’t make the same lasting memories as bigger traditions. Some families also skip them because they can be expensive or easy to forget about keeping up with them. While they are an exciting thing to do for the whole month of December, they don’t involve as much bonding as you would from other traditions. Advent calendars are liked but not loved enough to continue like other traditions.
5. Write Letters to Santa

This tradition is mostly enjoyed by younger children, so not every household participates. As kids grow older, many families naturally outgrow the activity, which lowers its popularity. Some parents still love this tradition because it keeps the magic of Santa alive for their kids. But while it can be magical and exciting with the new generations of children, they are believing in Santa less and less, which sadly lowers this tradition’s popularity. Writing letters to Santa remains fun and magical for some children, while the tradition itself is diminishing. Â
6. Matching Christmas Eve Pajamas

This tradition has become more of a modern trend than an actual tradition. They create cute photo moments and a sense of togetherness, which boosts their popularity. However, some families skip the tradition. It can feel unnecessary or too expensive to buy a new pair of PJs every year, or I can feel forced for the family members who don’t want to wear them. Others prefer long-standing traditions over new ones. Either way, they are a comfortable tradition; it’s not a really practical one, hence why it’s not so popular.Â
7. Send Christmas cards

It’s a tradition that helps people stay connected with family and friends during the holidays. Many enjoy the personal touch of writing messages and sharing family photos, which makes the tradition feel meaningful. However, it can be time-consuming and sometimes expensive, causing some people to skip it or switch to digital greetings. Despite that, it still holds strong sentimental value and remains more popular than many other traditions. This balance of nostalgia, connection, and effort places it solidly near the top of the list.
8. Gingerbread house decorating

It’s a creative and hands-on activity that families of all ages can enjoy together. It combines art, baking, and holiday fun, making it both festive and memorable. Many people look forward to seeing their finished houses displayed as part of their holiday dĂ©cor. But it is messy and time-consuming. It’s a delicious but very messy tradition, which is why it is not a popular tradition and while to always seen as fully stocked on the shelves in stores.
9. Bake Christmas cookies

It’s a fun and delicious tradition for families to spend time together during the holidays. The process of measuring, mixing, and decorating allows everyone to get involved and be creative. Freshly baked cookies also add a comforting, festive aroma to the home, making the holiday feel extra special. Many families enjoy sharing cookies with neighbors, friends, or at holiday parties, which spreads joy beyond the household. But like the gingerbread houses, it is very messy and not as popular as other traditions.
10. Cook a Christmas feast

It brings family and friends together around a shared meal, creating the heart of the holiday celebration. Preparing and enjoying traditional dishes allows families to pass down recipes and stories, strengthening their sense of heritage. The feast provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute, whether by cooking, setting the table, or sharing favorite dishes, but it also can do the opposite when deciding who cooks what, who can’t eat what and etc. The food and festive atmosphere make the holiday feel like another Thanksgiving, which beats the whole point of having a feast on Thanksgiving. This tradition is the least popular because it completely disregards Thanksgiving as a holiday.Â
