1. LAYER UP!
This might seem like an obvious thing to do, but trust me, you will see people walking outside wearing shorts and a t-shirt trying to seem cool when in reality they’re shivering in their flip-flops. Making sure to bundle up is crucial for Floridians, especially because the most extreme frigid temperature experienced during the day in Florida is a crazy number of 50°F. Yes, jeans and pants are actually in style! Instead of wearing shorts and a crop top to the Christmas tree lighting or the holiday parade, maybe choose to layer up so you don’t catch pneumonia!
2. Stay hydrated and moisturized!
Let’s be real people. Yes, Victoria’s Secret Bombshell cream smells great, but will it keep your elbows and skin from becoming dry and crispy? Absolutely not. Stop using that Bath & Body Works cherry blossom lotion and purchase some Jergens. Or Aveeno. Or some Nivea. Or literally any GOOD moisturizing lotion. If you want to prevent frostbite this year, make sure you have a hot drink in your hands at all times. Let’s also dial it down on the Starbucks cold drinks. Don’t get me wrong now, the Peppermint Mocha and the Iced Sugar Cookie Almond milk Latte are to die for, and you don’t have to completely give up those drinks, but let’s remember to drink lots of water as well as hot tea to keep those vocal chords from solidifying.
3. Still use sunscreen!
People. We are still in Florida. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that UV goes away! Some people can literally get sunburned during the winter because of the UV. Although it isn’t as hot and it might seem that your skin is protected because of the frigid temperatures, please wear sunscreen.
4. Be aware of the iguanas in the palm trees!
To be honest, if you’re walking outside anywhere, you’re gonna want to put on a helmet. Iguanas are EVERYWHERE. Green iguanas are not native to Florida and are very invasive. Since Iguanas are cold-blooded and rely on external warm temperatures, when the temperature drops, they do too. Many people have literally gotten CONCUSSED from iguanas falling from trees onto their heads. The iguanas go into a sort of sluggish state and become very dormant because they can’t produce their own body heat, leading them to fall from trees and cause brain damage to their victims. So, please be aware of your surroundings when walking under trees.
