On Friday, February 27, the Marco Island Academy Girls Varsity Lacrosse team had an impressive performance in a 17-5 victory over Immokalee High School.
In their pre-game huddle, Coach Ginther said to all the girls, “This will be our game.” From the start of the game, MIA set the tone with communication, smooth transitions, and strong offensive attacks, with 3 goals scored within the first 2 minutes.
The girls from Immokalee High School proved to be tough competitors and never gave up. MIA’s stick skills and technique ultimately made the difference.
Throughout the game, the MIA girls demonstrated teamwork and field awareness. Clean passes and smart movement of the ball allowed them to create scoring opportunities and maintain possession. The MIA girls applied pressure and forced turnovers, preventing Immokalee from building momentum.
MIA’s midfielders played a key role in this game by making it down the field, supporting both offensive and defensive plays. During halftime, the coaches were proud of the number of goals they had scored. Before half-time ended, Coach Wendy said to the team, “We can do this, this quarter will be better than the first.”
One highlight of the game was the MIA girls’ execution of new strategies that they had been practicing in recent weeks. In particular, the “stall” play was highly effective.
Toward the end of the game, with a strong lead secured, MIA successfully stalled the ball for the final few minutes. They maintained possession and gave the Imokalee High School girls no chance to get the ball, preventing any chance of a late comeback. The way the MIA girls were able to execute this play shows their growing confidence and game awareness.
The 17-5 win shows the team’s hard work, dedication, and improvement throughout the season from the first game to now.
Their diligence, extensive training, and hard work are shown on the field as they merge their individual skills together and use their chemistry as an advantage. If the Lady Rays continue to build on their communication, stick skills, and smart plays, the MIA girls lacrosse team will have even more successful games this season and dominate the field.
