“How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days” – A Movie Review

The 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity on TikTok and other social media platforms. This film, also known as a “chick flick,” follows the story of journalist Andie Anderson and advertising executive Benjamin Barry, who become entangled due to two work assignments. Even before its social media revival, this movie has held a special place in my heart as my comfort movie and all-time favorite.

Like many other chick flicks, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days takes viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions, from hysterical laughter to moments where you might find yourself throwing popcorn at your TV with tears in your eyes.

The movie’s main character, Andie Anderson, played by Kate Hudson, is the “How To” girl for Composer Magazine. Her latest assignment is to write a “How Not To” article on dating by intentionally driving a man away in ten days. Andie selects a  handsome man named Benjamin as her unwitting subject when she meets him at a bar.

Benjamin Barry, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, is an advertising executive looking to prove himself beyond his usual beer and sports assignments. He makes a bet with his colleagues to make a woman fall in love with him in order to win a prestigious advertising campaign. His colleagues, aware of Andie’s assignment, set him up for failure by choosing her.

As the ten days progress, Andie puts Benjamin through a series of outlandish scenarios to drive him away, such as being overly clingy, planning their future in a scrapbook, and even attending a couples therapy session. Despite these challenges, Benjamin remains committed to winning his bet and continues to try to win Andie over.

However, as Andie’s feelings begin to change, and she starts to fall for Benjamin, he also starts to see past the crazy scenarios and becomes interested in the real Andie.

Beyond its iconic yellow dress and Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain,” How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is a funny and heartwarming film that explores the complexities of relationships and the power of true connection. The movie’s humor and romantic gestures draw viewers in, and the chemistry between the lead actors is palpable. Whether you’re watching with your significant other or looking for a comfort movie, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is a must-see that easily earns a 5-star review and might just give you a new celebrity crush.
