The Good News Group at MIA

In September 2023, seniors Isabella Kakaty and Ava Tobiason started their very own Bible study group at Marco Island Academy. The Good News Group was founded by Mrs. Higuera, as well as Josey Kakaty and Angie Tobiason. Meetings are held every Tuesday in Mrs. Higuera’s room after school.

In the Good News Group, students discuss their faith and different messages they learn from the Bible. This student-run club takes part in community service opportunities and brainstorms ideas for sharing their faith within the community. Students exercise the values of leadership, communication, and friendship. Members take turns hosting sunrise Bible studies at their homes and on the beach.

The club is currently in the process of creating a prayer book, which they will station at church on Sundays at Christ Community Naples, CCN youth group on Wednesdays, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Thursdays at MIA. Students, teachers, and members of the community are free to write their prayer intentions in the prayer book. The club will then pray for the intentions at their next meeting.

At the upcoming January 9th meeting, the club presidents will be discussing their fast approaching service project. The group is planning to build playlists to assist with senior centers and home care, as a contribution to the Alive Inside organization. This organization is dedicated to helping reduce the loneliness of seniors through media education, as well as intergenerational programs. Further information will be released to students as this event is finalized.

For their February service project, the club is also planning to visit homes for the elderly or adult daycare centers in Naples, Florida. As a Valentine’s Day themed project, students would assist the elderly in making cards for their family, as well as bring them heart-shaped cookies, flowers, and decorations.

The Good News Group is dedicated to providing a safe space for students to discuss their faith with their fellow classmates and provide service to the community.
