At Marco Island Academy, a high school student is making a meaningful difference for animals in need. Amanda Fonseca, a junior at Marco Island Academy, recently founded the school’s first Animal Club, combining her love for animals with a desire to give back to the community.
Fonseca came up with the idea after noticing her school had many opportunities to help the people around the community, but not much had been done for animals. She believed students could play an important role in helping these animals while also learning responsibility, teamwork, and empathy. With encouragement from teachers and fellow students, Fonseca turned her idea into reality, officially launching the Animal Club this school year.
The club’s mission focuses on hands-on service and community involvement. Members plan to volunteer regularly at local animal shelters, where they will help with tasks such as cleaning, organizing supplies, socializing animals, and assisting staff. These experiences allow students to see firsthand the impact of their efforts and understand the importance of animal welfare.
In addition to volunteering, the Animal Club will hold animal food and toy drives throughout the year. Students will collect items such as pet food, treats, blankets, and toys, which will be donated directly to shelters and rescue organizations. These drives not only provide much-needed supplies but also raise awareness across campus about helping animals in need.
Fundraising is another key part of the club’s work. Members plan to organize events to raise money, with all funds donated to local shelters and animal welfare organizations. The money raised will help cover medical care, food, and other essential expenses for animals awaiting homes.
Through her leadership and compassion, Fonseca has created a club that reflects the values of kindness and service at Marco Island Academy. Her efforts are inspiring students to take action and make a difference. Her words are: “ Never be afraid of starting something just because no one else has.”
