RUSH! Album Review

Måneskin is an Italian band famous for revitalizing the modern rock & roll movement. With raunchy lyrics and an aggressive sound, Måneskin is slightly controversial due to their flamboyant showmanship and blunt lyrics. Their album RUSH! is evidence of this. High-energy lyrics, fast tempos, and unexpected lyrics peppered with heartfelt ballads piece together to make RUSH! a musical adventure that is definitely worth listening to.

1: GASOLINE

This is my personal favorite song on the album. Between the driving bass line, intense opening, and passionate chorus, ‘GASOLINE’ encompasses the energy of RUSH! in less than four minutes. Motivating and driving, the music itself in the song is definitely powerful. The lyrics are dripping in venom, with the pre-chorus being filled with phrases like “How are you sleeping at night… Living with all of those lives on your hands?” Overall, ‘GASOLINE’ is definitely an aggressive song that is perfect for listeners with energy.

2: TIMEZONE

Borderline the exact opposite of ‘GASOLINE’, ‘TIMEZONE’ is practically a love song. It is the singer’s lament towards long-distance relationships and depicts the strain produced by separation anxiety. It shows the feeling of bittersweet promise as well, with the promise of “coming home”. The heartache behind the message combined with the beautiful twisting of chords creates an amazing and resonating song.

3: GOSSIP

Guitar. Solo. Heaven. Featuring the famous guitarist Tom Morello, ‘GOSSIP’ has the most powerful riffs on the album. Depicting the turmoils of Hollywood and pressure faced by actors, ‘GOSSIP’ is a catchy song with a twisted message that is important to highlight. “Take your pills and dance all night” and, “put some plastic on your face,” show the problems at hand regarding medication and surgery addiction. Like ‘GASOLINE’, ‘GOSSIP’ is a high-energy song despite the dreary lyrics that will surely get anyone going.

4: OWN MY MIND

This song is a great example of how an album should start. ‘OWN MY MIND’ starts the album off very strong, but it isn’t the best on the album. Much like some of the other songs, this has some powerful bass. There is also some very creative lyricism. While everything sung does not have a very clear meaning, the symbolism behind the lyrics is very strong. The lyrics are filled with innuendo and other subtleties that some listeners might not notice.

5: BABY SAID

This is pretty much the more suggestive version of ‘Shut up and Dance’. ‘BABY SAID’ tells the story of the singer’s lover asking him to “please end this conversation.” The singer goes through all of the things that he would love to talk about with his ‘baby’, but she has other priorities than getting to know him. Emotionally at least.

6: MAMMAMIA

The singer of Måneskin Damiano David changes his vocal tone quite a bit for this song. While it is a great song, it is much harder to listen to on repeat compared to songs like ‘GOSSIP’ and ‘BABY SAID’. The introduction is filled with a very strong bass line, just slightly weaker than the one in ‘GASOLINE’. Driving and intense, ‘MAMMAMIA’ is a great song that combines elements found scattered throughout the album RUSH!

7: SUPERMODEL

‘SUPERMODEL’ is the most streamed song on this album. The lyrics tell a counterpart to ‘GOSSIP’, depicting a model seemingly fallen from grace in a literal reading. The symbolic meaning shows a party girl slowly falling apart. The upbeat tempo and lively feel make it a great song, but nothing insanely special about it lands it at number 7 on the list.

8: READ YOUR DIARY

This song will get stuck in your head. The easiest way to describe the music is the climbing and falling scales sung over a strong beat. The lyrics will definitely throw the listener for a loop. Blatand and unexpected, the song will keep you entertained and listening closely.

9: IF NOT FOR YOU

Being by far the slowest song on this album, this song stands out quite a bit. With it being much more mellow than the other bass-pumped songs, this one feels a lot more personal and romantic, which is fitting for the lyrics.

10: DON’T WANNA SLEEP

Intoxication and desperation, that’s the best way I can describe this song. Seemingly telling the story of a party or club, ‘DON’T WANNA SLEEP’ talks about dancing until death and getting incredibly intoxicated. The song features some rather creative lyrics and even a reference to The Beatles’ song ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’. Despite being ranked at 10, this is still a very good song that keeps the energy high and the volume up.

11: FEEL

Most of the songs on ‘RUSH!’ have the same vibe with the exclusion of ‘TIMEZONE’ and ‘IF NOT FOR YOU’, but ‘FEEL’ just sounds too much like the others. There is nothing overly unique to it and the lyrics are redundant. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with the song, but the droning repetition of the song makes it pretty underwhelming.

12: THE LONELIEST

One of the slowest songs on the album, ‘THE LONELIEST’ is the only song that can be called sad on this album. This song has some incredible lyrics when compared with the rest of the album, but it doesn’t sound nearly as good. It is the second most streamed song on the album, but there still isn’t a whole lot of love for the song. The song talks about being infatuated with someone whom the singer can’t be with. A truly sad story, that just doesn’t sound the same as the rest of the album.

13: KOOL KIDS

Everybody loves a little bit of a screamo song, but maybe not this much. While the majority of ‘KOOL KIDS’ is admittedly a bit catchy, the continual repetition of “kool kids, kool kids, kool kids” over and over a raspy scream doesn’t add to the musical appeal of the song.

14: MARK CHAPMAN

This is a bit of a difficult song to rank as it is written in Italian. The energy and the music itself are nice, and as long as the listener pretends to know the words it’s boppy, but that can be a bit difficult for the non-native speaker.

15: IL DONO DELLA VITA

Again, the Italian. This makes the song amazing for any Italians but a bit more difficult for those who don’t know the language. The music is a bit more repetitive, but the guitar and bass work together well in the song. Overall, it is a bit underwhelming, which earns it a low spot on the list.

16: LA FINE

Italian! Yes, Måneskin is an Italian band and it makes sense as to why so many of their songs are in the language, but that makes ranking them for an American listener quite difficult. The musical side is weaker in this song and it leaves much to be desired and is overall pretty boring.

17: BLA BLA BLA

No. Just no. Out of tune and redundant, there is no shame in skipping this song. The narration of a party gone wrong combined with the boring backing track makes it a bore to listen to. The constant repetition of the words “blah” and “ah” make it seem like the song will never be over, meaning it finishes at the lowest on the list.
