There is no other state in the United States with as many thunderstorms as Florida. Floridians often experience about 70 thunderstorm days per year, and even more along the Gulf Coast, with thunderstorm days reaching around 100 in a year.
But why is it that Florida, specifically in the summer, has such high thunderstorm and lightning activity?
Florida actually has the perfect conditions for thunderstorms. For one, it’s a peninsula, meaning it’s surrounded by water on three sides. This creates an abundant amount of humidity and moisture in the air, which is fairly important when it comes to creating storms.
Florida’s location on the globe is also a huge factor. Florida is very close to the Tropic of Cancer, meaning that it experiences a subtropical climate with an unforgiving sun. Due to the sun’s intense heat and the large amount of water surrounding Florida, water vapor easily accumulates into fluffy cumulus clouds.
Another cause is Florida’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, making it very susceptible to sea breezes. These opposing sea breezes collide and help lift the humid air higher, building stronger and more volatile thunderstorms.
The last main catalyst is the unstable atmosphere. Like sea breezes, unstable air helps lift humid air. This occurs when the ground’s surface temperature is heated, creating an updraft. This updraft then goes on to rise into the cooler air. As the rising air cools, water vapor condenses and creates a tall cumulonimbus cloud.
During the summer, these conditions only amplify as the Northern Hemisphere heats. Intense temperatures heat the water around the peninsula, while the Tropic of Cancer is especially affected by the sun’s rays. Sea breezes are more common due to temperature differences between land and water, and updrafts happen more frequently because of the rapid heating on land.
Florida storms can also be very dangerous, so it’s important to stay inside and clear of lightning during summer thunderstorms. Events like these specifically pertain to the Sunshine State, so it’s important to stay informed and prioritize safety.
