This past Friday, October 27th, our Lady Rays participated in MIA’s yearly Powderpuff game. The battle of the Blue and the Pink was very heated, and the Blue team took the win.
After an amazing senior night, voted captains from both the Pink and the Blue team met the refs at the 50 yard line for a very important opening coin toss. Blue won the coin toss, and decided to defer their possession to the start the second half. This meant that the Senior and Freshman Lady Rays on the Pink team, started off our game on offense.
Throughout the 40 minute matchup both teams scored 22 points, and tied at the end of regular duration. For the Pink team, Senior Helen Totten scored on a QB draw, Senior Adyson Clemons scored on a running play, and Senior Janie Cartwright scored on a Hail Mary throw that wowed the crowd.
For the Blue team, Sophomore Brinley Heflin scored twice on two separate plays and scored a pair of two-pointers. The pink team was struggling to keep up with her track runner speed! Along with Heflin, Junior Alina Nguyen scored on a short QB run to the endzone.
Along with scores, Senior Jessica Vorderstrasse intercepted Alina Nguyen’s throw. Vorderstrasse jumped in front of Junior Gracie Johnson to make the monster, crowd-pleasing, play. This was an energy-shifting play that ended up leading Totten to scoring the first touchdown of the game.
At the end of the duration, both teams lined up again at the 50-yard line for another coin toss. The results were the same, and the Blue team won the toss. This time the Blue team took possession first in an attempt to win. Nguyen marched the Blue team down the field and was unfortunately stopped on fourth down. Pink gained possession and was stopped on fourth down as well.
After a heated overtime, both teams had to line up again for a second round of overtime in order to fight for victory. Even with the obvious exhaustion of both teams, the refs continued play, but with a watered-down version of the game.
Each team had the ball on the 10-yard line, and had one attempt to score. If the team on offense did not score, the possession was changed to the other team. This sequence took numerous attempts. On Pink’s second attempt, Totten made an almost QB-draw touchdown, but the refs pointed at her being down before the end zone line. After Blue’s third attempt, Pink was up to bat again, and Junior Meghan Donaldson picked off Totten. The refs called it quits, and Blue won the game for the first time in MIA history.
With a sour taste in the Pink team’s mouth, Blue reigned victorious. At the end of the day, both teams played so strong and had very similar stats. The Pink team is hopeful for another matchup in May for Prom to get back their two-year winning streak.
Go Rays!
