High school is the biggest learning and growing curve in every teenager’s life. It’s the place where personalities and characters are individually created to become adults. As much as we might not appreciate the teachers we see every day, they’re the ones that have the most impact on future generations. In exploring what makes a good teacher, we turn to the insights of students and educators who emphasize the importance of well-roundedness, genuine care, effective communication, and adaptability.

“Do you think it’s important to have well-educated and well-rounded people teaching us?” When posed with this question,  students from Marco Island Academy shared their valuable perspectives.

Aaron Converse, a senior at Marco Island Academy, emphasizes the connection between a teacher’s expertise and the ability to build personal connections. He believes that a teacher who fully understands their subject fosters an environment where students can ask more questions and deepen their understanding.

Emma Nash, a junior at Marco Island Academy, adds that well-rounded teachers inspire greater motivation in students, as the desire to make their mentors proud becomes a powerful driving force. Emma identifies a good teacher as someone who genuinely cares about their students, displaying a passion for their work and a sincere desire for their success. She also notes the prevalence of educators whose hearts may not be fully in their teaching, emphasizing the need for genuine dedication.

Ella Nelson another Junior at Marco Island Academy, underscores the importance of looking up to teachers, asserting that well-rounded educators allow for more creativity and motivation, providing a less restrictive learning environment.

To gain a deeper understanding, we turn to Mr.Scalia, Marco Island Academy’s English instructor, and  Mrs. Galiana, Marco Island Academy’s Humanities teacher, educators who provide a comprehensive view of what makes a good teacher. Mr. Scalia argues that a good teacher must be human, a master communicator capable of adapting their approach to the unique needs of each student. This involves effective communication, active listening, and understanding when to be firm or empathetic. Additionally, a good teacher must have high standards but recognize the individuality of each student, promoting a fresh and innovative approach to teaching “

Mrs. Galiana emphasizes the importance of connections and, relationships. She notes that understanding students as individuals before addressing their academic needs is crucial. A good teacher, she contends, not only imparts content knowledge but also exemplifies important life skills and values. The ability to maintain structure and manage a classroom effectively while setting an example for students is a delicate balance that defines the best educators.

In the world of education, a good teacher plays a crucial role in shaping the academic, intellectual, and personal development of studentsWell-roundedness, genuine care, effective communication, adaptability, and a commitment to shaping the future are crucial elements that define an exceptional educator. As we reflect on the perspectives of students and teachers alike, it becomes evident that the impact of a good teacher extends far beyond the classroom, leaving an enduring legacy in the lives of those they have inspired.
