Here are the latest, most popular teen slang words and phrases. Use this list to assist in understanding what current teenagers are saying these days. 

Hype:  (adjective)

It means you’re excited or can be used when there is a lot of attention about something “What’s the hype all about?” “I’m hype!” 

Period: (adjective)

It means that’s it, like end of sentence. It can also be used to hype (see Hype) someone up for example: “You look good today, period!” 

Slat: (noun / adjective)

It stands for slime love all the time, but it can be used to describe a hype situation or refer to  homie. “That’s slat.” “She’s my slat.” 

Fire: (adjective)

Something is really good in a wild way. “This song is so fire.” “This sandwich is fire!” 

Grind: (verb)

When you’re working hard to get stuff done like a job or a goal. “It’s grind time” “I have to grind for that bag.”

In my bag: (prepositional phrase)

When you’re sad or deep down in your feels or it can mean when you’re focused on your grind (see Grind). “I’ve been in my bag since the breakup.” “I’m in my bag right now.” 

Extra: (adjective)

Excessive or dramatic. “You’re so extra.” “That girls outfit is so extra.” 

No Cap: (adjective)

Someone says this when they’re not lying, usually it’s unbelievable but they’re telling the truth. “I’m not capping.” “No cap!” 

Shade: (adjective)

Acting in a casual way with subtle disrespect. “She’s throwing shade at me.” 

Flex: (adjective/verb)

To stunt or show off something “I’m flexing this new necklace I just bought” 

“That’s such a flex.” 

Go off: (verb)

Can be used when you’re hyping (see Hype) someone up or when they’re ranting or angrily complaining. “Yes sis, go off!” 

Lit: (adjective)

Used to describe something excited or with high energy. “This party is lit!” 

Lowkey: (adjective)

Used to describe something discreetly “I’m lowkey hungry.” “This song is lowkey good.” 

Highkey: (adjective)

Used to describe something sincerely. “I’m highkey tired.” “You’re highkey looking good today.” 

Slay: (verb)

When someone succeeds or accomplishes something. “You slayed that” “Girl, you’re slaying right now!” 

Stan: (noun / adjective)

Someone who is obsessed with another person (stalker fan). “Hunter is such a stan of him.” 

Thirsty: (adjective)

Used to describe someone who is desperate for attention or compliments. “Girl, you’re so thirsty right now.” 

Slaps: (adjective)

Is used to describe something that is usually really good. “That song slaps!” 

Dime: (adjective)

Is used to describe something or someone on a scale of 1-10. “That girl is a dime piece.” 

I’m weak: (adjective)

This phrase is short for “that was funny!” “You got me so weak” 

Canceled: (adjective)

Used to describe the rejection of a person, place, or thing. “He’s canceled” “That song is canceled.”
