Ethics Bowl is a special form of debate for high school students. It is a debate that is not about knocking down opposing teams but rather engaging with other teams in the most constructive, insightful, and collaborative ways.

In Ethics Bowl there are 15 regional cases in which two teams of five people each have a formal debate on ethical topics such as race, religion, and gender equality.  The three judges will pick two of the 15 topics. Each team is given the name, either “Team A” or “Team B.” Team A will address one of the first 15 topics, and then Team B has to formulate a response to Team A’s discussion and then respond with their own views.

Each side addresses the topic as if it is in a seminar, and tries to answer the question in the best way that they can to show their views and opinions. After each side addresses their topic, the teams switch, and the team that responded the previous round will begin. The winner is determined based on the combined scores for the judges.

MIA’s five competitors, are Cassidy Carlson, Cailtin Carlson, Lauren Johnson, Teagan Havemeier and Chelsea Casabona. They will be competing on January 23rd, 2018 at the FSW Main Campus.

Third year Ethics Bowl coach, Mr. Chris Liebhart states “I have high expectations this year. Our first year we placed second in the competition, and last year we came in fourth.” This year marks Cassidy Carlson’s third time competing and Chelsea Casabona returns for a second time.  “I think that experience will lend itself valuable,” said Liebhart, “and our three new members each bring positives to the group. Together I believe this is our strongest team. My goal is to win our region bowl this year.”
