Wicked, originally a book by Gregory Maguire, is a widely-known musical that is loved by people all over the world. It tells the story of The Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and The Good Witch (Glinda) from the Wizard of Oz. The songs in the musical are used to help portray their feelings throughout this show and are often very powerful; However, the second part of the movie (Act 2), hasn’t come out yet and some of the songs in there are beautiful. The first movie was magical and there was nobody else that could’ve played these characters like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo did.
Wicked Movie 1 – A Soundtrack Review
No One Mourns The Wicked – 10/10
Wow. Right off the bat, No One Mourns The Wicked is my favorite song in the whole movie. Ariana’s voice is so magical and you can really tell she put in the hard work to make her voice more operatic instead of her usual pop. You don’t get how emotional the song is since it’s at the beginning unless you’ve already watched the show but in terms of how it sounds, it’s, in my opinion, the prettiest song in the show. It’s not just Ariana, it’s the whole ensemble and the other characters that sing. It tells a beautiful story and the emotions are almost overwhelming.
Dear Old Shiz – 7/10
There isn’t a lot to say about this song except for the fact that it’s pretty. There are a bunch of harmonies and voices that blend together very well and we get some of that opera from Ariana again but it’s comparable to just watching a church choir. I appreciate it but it isn’t my favorite.
The Wizard And I – 9/10
The Wizard And I is so good. She really tells a heartfelt story and portrays this feeling of hope that makes listeners and watchers hopeful too. Cynthia Erivo is so talented. The high notes she incorporated into the ending weren’t too much and it fit perfectly into the context and the song. It’s more of an upbeat song. It’s the first taste of her voice that we get and it doesn’t disappoint. The way she changes the song to make it hers is incredible and it’s so good.
What Is This Feeling? – 10/10
I LOVE this song. It’s such a comedic song and the annoyance in their voices and the rivalry is so funny. Though fighting, their harmonies blend together so well and then they sing in unison, it sounds like one voice which is so cool. They twisted the song and the lines to make it even funnier than it is. It’s such an upbeat and quirky little song and it’s obviously and understandably a fan favorite.
Something Bad – 7/10
It’s very important to the plot of the movie but it’s not anything too special. It’s a shorter song with a pretty melody but most of it just sounds like speaking and there’s nothing that stands out about it besides the lyrics and the story it tells. There’s a pretty harmony in it too.
Dancing Through Life – 10/10
WOW. This song is so good. The actor that played Fiyero is so talented. When watching it, he had chemistry with everybody and you can tell in his singing too. It’s a song that makes you feel free. He jazzes up the song a little bit and the little riffs he adds match his character so well and it’s a very pleasant listen. His notes are very impressive and it’s a song that gets you to smile. There are changes in the melody a couple of times and it keeps your attention.
Popular – 9.5/10
Obviously, this is a classic. This is when you really see how funny Glinda is. Although it is a little overplayed, it’s understandable because it’s a fun song. Ariana really embodied Kristin Chenoweth in this and did a great job and really took care of Glinda. She did put a little bit of Ariana vocals in it which actually made it really good.
I’m Not That Girl – 9/10
This is a very underrated song. It’s not that popular since there aren’t any flashy high notes in it but personally, I think this is one of the prettiest songs in terms of the melody. It’s a love song but it’s a sad one because she’s doubting herself. It’s a very soft song and it makes you feel bad for her.
One Short Day – 5.5/10
There’s really not much to say and there’s a lot of people in the song and it’s really cool who made a cameo in the movie during this song but it’s really nothing special and it isn’t a fan favorite, understandably. It’s an upbeat song with funny components but it’s not a favorite of mine,
A Sentimental Man – 5/10
This song is so irrelevant to the plot of the story in my opinion. Much like One Short Day, there’s not a lot to it and it bored me during the movie a little. If you want to go to the bathroom during the show, go during this song. You won’t be missing much. This is probably my absolute least favorite out of the whole musical.
Defying Gravity – 9.5/10
Defying Gravity. The song that ends the first movie. This is the song that got advertised the most and that drew the most people in. The way Cynthia allured the audience with her crazy high notes and the riffs, the meaning and power in the song, and the whole moment between Glinda and Elphaba is a heartwarming, emotional scene. This is one of the best songs in the show and most peoples’ favorites. It’s not my personal favorite because it is also quite overplayed but it’s still undeniably a good song.
