In 2800 BC, cats of all types of kinda and especially black cats were worshiped by the Egyptians. This was because cats were believed to be guardians against evil spirits, bringing good luck. Punishments were carried out for crimes involving injuring or killing cats.
In the eighth century black cats were used by sailors for good luck and to predict the weather. Wives of fishermen would keep black cats in their homes because they believed they would help their husbands return safely. It was said a cat sneezing is a sign of rain, if they are self-grooming good weather is on its way, and snoring means bad weather is coming.
It was in the seventeenth century, during the Salem Witch Trials that black cats were then given a bad reputation. It was believed throughout America that witches could transform into black cats or black cats could assist witches in their craft. Both witches and black cats were prosecuted during this time.
Though the Salem Witch Trials were around 323 years ago, black cats still face discrimination to this day. They are least likely to be adopted compared to other cats and kittens, having the lowest rate of adoption at 10% and the highest rate of euthanasia at 74.6%.
In October of 2022, one poll organization and ACANA Pet Food held a poll asking 2,000 American cat owners if they think black cats are good or bad luck. While 21% believe they’re bad luck, 41% believe a black cat crossing your path brings good fortune! What do you think?
