This is a natural and necessary process, however, it can be overdone by human activities like construction and dredging, and exacerbated by the effects of global warming. Previously stable beaches are disappearing, exposing coastal areas to natural disasters and lose land and natural habitats.

Coastal Erosion is when waves remove sand or rocks from the shoreline. Coastal erosion causes previously stable areas to become more vulnerable to storms like hurricanes, exposing them to stronger winds and higher storm surges. This isn’t just a distant problem, it’s happening right here and now locally.
Compared to other areas, Marco Island has yet to face much coastal erosion. However, this doesn’t mean the island’s beaches are immune. The beaches, which draw in large amounts of tourists, are gradually being eroded. This not only threatens the beaches themselves but also results in losses for local businesses.
