‘Short n’ Sweet’ is the sixth studio album released by the singer Sabrina Carpenter. The total overview of her past albums include, Eyes Wide Open (2015), EVOlution (2016), Singular Act I (2018), Singular Act II (2019), emails i can’t send (2022), and Short n’ Sweet (2024). But some extended plays that she has created include, Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying (2014), Pandora Sessions (2017), Spotify Singles (2023), and Fruitcake (2023).
This album is set to emit a flirty yet unserious energy as each song plays throughout. Some songs dive into serious concepts such as heartbreak or betrayal but still produce a humorous aspect to each one individually. While Sabrina Carpenter has been known for being a true pop-star you’d be surprised to find out some approaches she took with each song as she creates a country or R&B twist.
Taste: 10/10
‘Taste’ is the first track on the sixth studio album, and Sabrina leaked this song a couple days before it was released as a complete album. It encompasses a feeling of happiness and up-beat energy. With its disco-infused musical beats it captures the listeners attention and gives off a sense of satisfaction.
Please Please Please: 9/10
This song was released before the full album came out on June 6th, 2024. ‘Please Please Please’ became a quick favorite and hit the Billboard charts as number two for the Hot 100. Whilst producing a very catchy beat and lyrics that will get stuck in your head forever, this song was a success.
Good Graces: 8/10
This song is the definition of “standing on business”. As Sabrina sings this pleasant melody throughout the song, she sends a strong message about how she can be a sweet individual but she will not tolerate disrespect. Shady behavior or anything relatively close to that idea is what ‘Good Graces’ does not support.
Sharpest Tool: 9/10
‘Sharpest Tool’ can be referred to by the saying “not the sharpest tool in the shed”. Whilst Sabrina sings the song, she explains the concept of her partner not showing a deep enough sense of love for her. A lyric that sticks out in this song can be seen as “You’re confused and I’m upset, but we never talk about it.” Sabrina expresses the result of the matter as each lyric unfolds.
Coincidence: 7/10
This song is all about love and betrayal. As this common theme repeats throughout the entirety of this album almost, this song stands out as she mocks her ex-partner about always ending up with someone else, hinting at the song title “coincidence”. Whilst the guitar strings play in the background, this song sounds rather up-beat despite the lyrics that are being sung.
Bed Chem: 7/10
‘Bed Chem’ is a more provocative song that Sabrina sings but instead of the idea of betrayal this song is centered around her new-found chemistry with her current partner, who is Barry Keoghan. Personally, I adore the vocals in this song and the rhythm in the background. This song gives the perfect combination of love and enjoyment.
Espresso: 6/10
This song was released before the full album came out on April 11th, 2023. It quickly became a lead single and won over a ton of listeners’ hearts. With its catchy tune and lyrics that will get stuck in your head forever, it is definitely worth the listen. After all, it’s a very popular song with the classic lyric: “That’s that me espresso.” which Sabrina sings.
Dumb & Poetic: 10/10
‘Dumb & Poetic’ is a chef’s kiss song and my personal favorite on this album. This song dives into the idea of reminiscing on past relationships and situations with how everything has played out. A self-centered cycle that Sabrina was trapped in, as pours out her emotions lyric by lyric. I recommend giving this song a listen 100%.
Slim Pickins: 9/10
‘Slim Pickins’ is the closest song that will fall under the country-pop category. With its charming tune, it dives into the topic of having limited options when it comes to future relationships and situations. Describing the idea that the one many people want cannot truly be obtained. A lyric that speaks out to me personally is, “What’s a girl to do? This boy doesn’t even know the difference between “there”, “their”, and “they’re.” This lyric specifically is displaying how the person she is talking to is mentally immature especially when it comes to love as well, hint the title ‘Slim Pickins’.
Juno: 6/10
If you’ve ever seen the film Juno, this song pertains to that concept. Sabrina expresses the idea that she would like to have the concept of having a family and children. A lyric that stands out in this song can be seen as “You make me wanna make you fall in love.” Which supports the idea of being with the one you love for life and would consider beginning a family with.
Lie To Girls: 7/10
‘Lie To Girls’ explores the two lane road of the complicated aspects of a romantic relationship. As the girl in this situation lies, cries, and goes to extreme lengths to save the situation the guy lies to uphold the false intentions within the relationship. This basic concept explains how girls will lie to themselves to stay in relationships even when they’re not deserving of them. The soft vocals throughout the song mimic the idea of peace after the undesirable situations unfold.
Don’t Smile: 8/10
‘Don’t Smile’ displays the aftermath of a relationship and how things truly played out. The lyric Sabrina sings, “Don’t smile because it happened, baby, cry because it’s over.” repeats throughout the song constantly as a reminder that the ex-partner missed out on something possibly good. This song brings out mixed feelings of bitterness and sadness, yet it reflects on the past. Although this song is a bit shorter in length compared to the other songs, it is still definitely one of my personal favorites.
