Tensions between the conservative and liberal sides of Congress have reached a breaking point yet again. The conservative’s attempt to cut down spending in a democratically swaying Senate has led to high tensions and the threat of a government shutdown coming this Sunday.
While Republicans are pushing for budget cuts, Democrats have proposed to continue funding through November 17th. This funding would also go to humanitarian aid in organizations like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and help de-escalate the Russo-Ukrainian War.
The two main figureheads in this conflict are Speaker Kevin McCarthy for the Republicans and President Joe Biden for the Democrats. As tensions rise, McCarthy suggested on Wednesday to set up a meeting, but the White House is apprehensive about this offer due to the combative nature of the speaker when it comes to budgeting issues.
House Republicans are scheduled to meet off-campus at 9 AM to try and get on the same page as regards to their stance on the budgeting and how to best compromise. Democrats hope that this will lead to a more clear and effective compromise.
The trickle-down effect produced by the shutdown affects practically everyone employed in a federal position. This means everyone from TSA employees to national parks workers will be working without pay until the government reopens. Time will tell if the government truly shuts down, but experts are worried.
