Marco Island Academy recently welcomed the addition of the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists to its array of clubs. The purpose of the organization is to recognize students for their distinctive service and achievements for both The Wave and Legatum. 

On Friday, May 12th, MIA opened up its doors to past students who went above and beyond – those who paved the way for what MIA’s newspaper and yearbook has become today. Those in attendance were met with their photos mounted on the Quill and Scroll ‘Wall of Honor,’ alongside an induction into the society to display the appreciation for their hard work and dedication. It was a chance for current members of the newspaper and yearbook to gather and share memories, experiences, and wisdom among one another. 

“It was one of the most special moments in my career having  journalism graduates join our current team in celebrating each other’s accomplishments”, said Keith Scalia, advisor of The Wave and Legatum.

The Wall of Honor serves as an honorary reminder of the people who laid the foundation of the programs; for underclassmen specifically, an inspiration to work hard to shape the future direction of The Wave and Legatum.

“Looking up from my desk and seeing the legacy and accomplishments of those before me serves as a constant reminder of the home and family they built, and we continue to grow”, stated Annabelle Frazer, Features Editor of The Wave.

Both programs have come a long way from their beginning. Each year, the staff works tirelessly towards making improvements and new additions to the newspaper and yearbook. Looking at all of the students’ accomplishments, they are working towards even greater achievements in the future. 

Students hope to reach further heights by entering material from both the newspaper and yearbook into national competitions. Being a nationally recognized school publication would be life changing for not only the hard working students behind the scenes, but the entire MIA community.
