Senior Spotlight: Skye LaButte

Skye LaButte is a senior at MIA and is the right side or outside hitter for the volleyball team. She is a president of SGA and has been a member of NHS, SNHS, and Key Club throughout her high school years.

Skye plans to attend a four-year university and is exploring in-state as well as out-of-state options. She does not plan to continue her volleyball career but instead plans to focus on her education.

Skye first started playing volleyball in the 6th grade. The jersey number she chose was number 8. She chose this number for a couple of reasons. Originally she wanted the number 24 for her dad as it was his favorite number. Unfortunately, the numbers didn’t go that high so she chose 8 instead because 2 x 4 is 8. It was symbolic because it is an infinity sign, and Skye said “meaning my dad is with me forever and always on and off the court.”

Skye’s favorite memory was senior night. The entire gym was packed and there were more kids at that game than any other. The entire gym was supporting MIA and wearing white. The volleyball team beat Lely on Skye’s senior night and the whole crowd rushed the court to congratulate the team.

Throughout all of her high school years, Skye’s biggest achievement was being a part of the Lady Rays volleyball team and beating Lely. It was an achievement considering the difference in the population of our schools. For our size of the population, it was a great moment for Skye.

The first game was simply unreal for Skye. Everything was perfect, the stands were packed, and everyone was in white cheering the volleyball team on. It felt so good to Skye to have a gym for her last volleyball season ever. She said it was nice having students, faculty, family, friends, and community members there to support her.

The person who impacted Skye the most throughout her volleyball and high school career is her mom. Her mom has been by her side through it all, and she has always been Skye’s biggest supporter. Skye’s mom is always there and helping her in any way she can. She has inspired Skye to be just like her. Skye’s siblings have made a huge impact on her life as well. They have always been there for her and had her back. Coach Alyssa has had a huge impact on Skye’s volleyball experience throughout high school. She gave so much support and dedication to the team. She always pushed Skye to be the best she could be and was always a great mentor. The admin team has also made a great impact on Skye by being there to support her. Throughout volleyball, Camryn and Sophia have been by Skye’s side for four years straight.
