Senior Spotlight: Sophia Shea

Sophia Shea is a senior at MIA and is the libero of the volleyball team. She plans on attending a four-year university after high school. Sophia has been a part of Key Club and Student Government all four years of high school. This year she is a president of Student Government.

Sophia’s future plans are to attend culinary school and hope to one day open her own bakery. She does not plan on playing volleyball in college but will still continue to practice volleyball in her free time.

The first time Sophia started playing volleyball was in fifth grade and she started taking it seriously in sixth grade. Her jersey number is six. She chose this jersey number because it has been her number for the past 8 years. She has grown fond of her jersey number six as she has experienced many great memories playing in this number.

Sophia’s biggest achievement in volleyball is being a part of the team. Sophia was grateful to have spent all four years playing volleyball with her best friends Skye Labutte and Camryn Rose. In her senior and junior years, she was able to play with another best friend: Summer LaButte. Being able to play side by side with her best friends was the highlight of her season.

Sophia’s favorite memory of this volleyball season was her senior night. She got to spend it with her best friends and supporters. It was an added bonus that the team was able to beat Lely. After the game, the student section came out to support the team which made it even more special for Sophia.

Sophia’s first time playing in the new gym was definitely one to remember. She says, “It was such a great feeling knowing that MIA has so many people who put their time and donations into the school so that the volleyball team and other sports can have a court to play on.”

The person that impacts Sophia the most throughout her high school and volleyball career is her brother. Her brother is the one that always pushes her to do her best and has been the person to be there for Sophia through her ups and downs. Sophia’s brother is forever her number one supporter and her best friend since birth. Sophia says she wouldn’t be the girl she is today without him.
