On December 4th, at Veterans Park, from about 5-8pm, around 3,000 people gathered at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Marco Island. Live music was performed by the Marco Island Charter Middle School and Marco Island Academy school bands. Christmas songs were played all night to get the crowd into the holiday spirit, such as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, and other Christmas favorites. Prestley Irvan, an MIA chorus member said that “it was fun practicing for the ceremony. When it came time to perform the people got a chance to hear what we had learned.”

The festivities lasted about three hours. Some included meeting Mr. and Mrs. Claus, playing various Christmas-themed games, eating Christmas cookies, and watching the kids perform their songs and dances. The younger participants seemed to be thoroughly entertained while the adults stayed busy lighting the tree. It’s safe to say that the Tree Lighting Ceremony was an overall success!
