Three of Interact Club’s freshmen Reese Jones, Kirra Polley, and Grace Fields sell magical themed treats.

Over the course of Homecoming Week, the Interact Club’s plethora of bake sales could be found stationed on the outskirts of lunch. The club made over $400 from these three themed bakes sales from the first day of Spirit Week to Halloween Day. Last year, Interact was practically unknown compared to Key Club, Marco Island Academy’s most popular club. Now, Miss Scott is on the front lines of Interact again, and it is gaining popularity amongst freshmen.

“I’m actually very excited to be one on one with the kids again,” Miss Scott tells The Wave. “I like working with 9th graders and seeing them grow in the community. Seniors leave a legacy, but 9th graders make the club larger and bring fervor.”

“The freshmen are a really positive addition. It’s good to have new energy and future leaders,” says Chelsea Casabona, a senior and the club’s current president.

With an influx of interested freshmen, the club plans to sponsor many of Marco Island’s large community events, such as Christmas Island Style and Seafood Fest, as well as help the community rebuild after the hurricane by restoring the Otter Mound and a food drive for 6-L Farms. Similarly, Interact wishes to help with the construction of the Marco Island Academy float for the Christmas Island Style parade and send Christmas cards to troops.

“They’re great opportunities to outreach in the community and recognized by Marco,” says Chelsea. When she leaves the position, she “hopes to get involved in more outside community events and school-wide events.”

According to Miss Scott, the most important aspect of participating in Interact Club is “To interact! Not because it looks good on resumes and gets service hours, but to truly give back to the community. I want kids to have authentic experiences and to spend time together.”
